WHAT IS A SWORN OR AN OFFICIAL TRANSLATION?

This is a very common question as many people do not know what an official translation is and the responsibility involved for the official translator-interpreter who signs and stamps the translation.

Sworn translations are carried out by sworn translators-interpreters who are appointed for that purpose by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Those translations are signed and stamped by the sworn translator, who certifies that the translation is faithful to the contents of the original document.

All Spanish official and government authorities require sworn translations of any document submitted in a language other than Spanish, since those translations are certified and guaranteed by the sworn translators under their own responsibility.

WHAT DOES AN OFFICIAL TRANSLATOR DO?

A sworn or official translator-interpreter is a professional translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs  to officially translate from one language into another and certify their translations.

An official translator and interpreter is legally empowered to translate and interpret from a foreign language into an official language in Spain and vice versa. Official translators shall certify each translation their stamp and signature that the translation is faithful to the contents of the original document written in a foreign language, therefore, the translation has the legal validity that some public or private bodies require to carry out some proceedings. This way sworn translators act like a notary as they certify the translations they sign and stamp and they are liable for their translations.
